Starting any new career is scary. Starting a career on the railroad can be down right frightening. We've all been there at one time or another. We recommend every new hire complete the following steps to ensure a prosperous career.
Never get in a hurry. It doesn't matter if the work gets done or not, as long as you are working safely. If you are working with someone who is "rushing", let them know they need to slow down. Don't let others rush you (management or other members). If you feel like others are rushing you, explain to them that your are doing the job, "as safely and efficiently" as you can. Getting in a hurry is the quickest way to get hurt or fired.
2.QUESTION
No one knows everything. Whether you are a new hire or 30+ year employee, if you are ever unsure of what to do, stop and ask questions. It doesn't make a difference if your blocking a mainline, another train, or have a yardmaster yelling at you, if you are unsure of what to do, stop everything until you know where you are at, and what you should be doing.
3.BROTHERHOOD
You may not always get along with all your fellow Brothers/Sisters. However, it is important to always remember that you are a UNION MEMBER. You should always look out for your fellow brothers/sisters first and foremost.
We strongly encourage every member download this form and fill it out. Be sure to update it at least once a year. Also, make sure your spouse/loved one has a copy of it or knows where to find it.
